Neil Young (3:54)

On October 30 and 31, 1999, Brian Wilson performed at Neil and Pegi Young’s Bridge School Benefit Concerts at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. Although Brian had played a handful of shows in the US and Japan earlier in the year as part of his first-ever solo tour, this was by far his biggest US solo show ever. It was also the only time to date he’d shared a bill, creating the first opportunity for some of his musical peers who joined him on the bill to see him perform live. I’ll never forget the scene during soundcheck: in the wings on one side were Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Pearl Jam and Lucinda Williams, and on the other side were Pete Townshend, Billy Corgan, Green Day, Larry Taylor and Sheryl Crow. All were overcome with the emotion of the moment, and it was all that any of the performers could talk about the rest of the weekend. It was right after this soundcheck that I spoke with Neil Young, and soon after that that he asked Brian’s permission to join in on ‘Good Vibrations’, his crash-course organ lesson from Darian Sahanaja and Nicky Wonder also included here.
